Guides and dolls
It may be that Margot Robbie is a “living doll” in “the colourful world of Barbie” in her new movie (“fantastic, not plastic”, HS, 6/4), but is her “wonderful wardrobe and a life of seemingly endless partying” what we want our children to see?
Maybe I’m just a reactionary prude with no sense of humour, but given the current media focus on needing curvy female role models whose looks are less significant compared to confidence and personality, what does being a “doll” mean in today’s cultural landscape?
I cannot answer that question, but movies that portray females as “living dolls” obviously have their own answer. Does being human even rate in 21st century Hollywood?
