‘Goal power’ for Penbo

For over 60 years I have been a passionate devotee of Aussie rules, especially ye olde Blueboys.

I pen this letter to suggest David Penberthy watch the “dying” minute of the 1979 grand final for its “emotional power of a goal” (“Lessons every code could learn (especially the men)”, SHS, 20/8).

Maybe as a female I was just a hysterical, feral Carlton supporter when the team beat our most hated rival, The Pies, by that one goal; five behinds to make my one point clear.

My ecstasy of emotion at Ken Sheldon’s winning kick was immeasurable on any pedestal of power! I’ve attended four soccer games in my life, all played by men, three in the UK in the 1970s and one “friendly” here between Australia and Iran in the 90s. They bored me s—less. Obviously, as a female I am still deliriously deluded about what is the most excitinhg sport spectacle on Earth. I didn’t bother watching The Matildas.

More fool me, eh?
