Mohr reveals gap

AS a workplace where rule changes over recent years have tried to enhance AFL players’ safety and welfare, it seems unbelievable that the AFL has no WorkCover scheme to support those initiatives (“Mohr than I can take”, HS, 24/4).

With jockeys the only sportspeople to access a WorkCover scheme, the plight of Tim Mohr highlights an urgent need for redress to this lamentable, if not inequitable, situation. WorkCover schemes should be introduced comprehensively across all sporting codes to ensure a level and fair playing grounds for all participants.

Moreover, as governments invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising to promote the importance of safe workplaces in all industries, mandatory legislation should be introduced to encompass the sporting workplace. Occupational health and safety laws need to be broadened to incorporate a WorkCover scheme.
