No man’s an island

As Hugh Mackay points out so pertinently, victimhood can often seem “a hiding place” for those unable to accept responsibility for their own problems (“Hiding in plain sight”, August 8-9). At the same time, however, it seems important to appreciate that one cannot always be in control of one’s destiny. Of course we are individuals with an inner self that should be true, honest and respectful, but we are also part of a society where our interactions with others can inadvertently impact our dreams and hopes through no fault of one’s own.
