Discuss body image
MICHAEL Hawton realistically highlights the “dangers” of social media addiction for children, advising parents to start saying no (“Stop a platform for harm”, Opinion, 4/11)
With 40 per cent of girls looking at Instagram “feeling bad about their bodies” and 40 per cent of young male users “also experiencing negative social comparisons”, a new approach is obviously needed.
As many parents find restricting device usage too difficult, perhaps they should instead discuss body image with their children to help them “critique” social media imagery in a relatable way. This could be more constructive.
